Is Resveratrol Safe? Yup!

One of our favorite scientists who contribute to knowledge on how to live in harmony with nature is Dr. Stephen Chaney, PhD.
They are at it again!

Natural Wisdom - Don’t believe everything you hear!

You may have seen the headlines "Wait For The Research Before Turning To Resveratrol Supplements". That headline, or similar ones, showed up in many newspapers across the country last week.

The gist of the story was that reseveratrol supplements are brand new and that there are no long term safetydata on them.

First you need to understand the motivation behind such headlines.  You see whenever an idea becomes very popular, there will be some scientists who will question whether it is correct. Similarly, whenever a product becomes very popular, there are some scientists who will question its safety or its usefulness.

It's part of the scientific process to constantly question that which is accepted as true or good by most experts - and that's a good thing.

Of course, there are always journalists who question popular ideas or products because that sells newspapers- but that's a whole other story.

So the second question is whether there is any truth behind the headlines.

As usual, there is a kernel of truth there. It is true that there is no long term safety data on those resveratrol products that have entered the market in the last couple of years.

But that comes under the heading of what is commonly referred to as an "oxymoron". If a product has only been around for a couple of years there simply hasn't been enough time to accumulate long term safety dat on
that particular product.

So we need to ask what we do know about the safety of resveratrol. It turns out that we know quite a bit.

In the first place, it simply isn't true that we have no long term information about resveratrol supplements.

Resveratrol supplements have been on the market for over 20 years and no safety concerns have emerged from the use of those products.

Secondly, there have been a number of animal studies in which the animals have been given very high doses of resveratrol over almost their entire life span with no ill effects.

Finally, in a recent clinical trial resveratrol was given to volunteers at much higher doses than are found in any resveratrol supplement on the market and no short term toxicities were observed.

As a scientist I am not willing to declare the case closed until the long term data are in - which won't be for many years.

However, based on all of the available data I consider it highly unlikely that resveratrol supplements with
high purity ingredients - supplements like Shaklee's Vivix - will cause any long term ill effects.

The currently available data suggest that resveratrol supplements are likely to offer many health benefits and few, if any, risks
