Taking Fitness to Another Level

A complete PowerPoint Presentation on Sports Nutrition is available by request. We will send it via an email attachment. Contact bunnysam@bestselfusa.com

The audio excerpt in tonight's program is from Rick Seymour's CD "Sports Nutrition for Active Athletes, Weekend Warriors, and Active People of All Ages". The full length CD is available at http://www.thefrontrunners.com/

Before We Start

!!WARNING!! !!WARNING!!

There are many "HEALTH" products on the market that are "unhealthy"! When you buy these products you are paying for their advertising budget and their wife's new BMW rather than high quality ingredients and scientific studies. As a rule of thumb; if you have seen it advertised on TV or other media it may be poor quality and may even be bad for you.

A 20 year landmark nutrition study done by the University of California at Berkley recently discovered that people who use name brand supplements were more at risk for disease than those people who used nothing. However, people who used organically sourced - cold processed supplements were significantly more healthy.

Study: Steroids found in supplements
By A.J. Perez, USA TODAY
Pro and amateur athletes and weekend warriors who consume supplements to get in shape or stay there might be getting more than what they paid for — such as small amounts of steroids and illegal stimulants including ephedrine.
ATHLETES FEEL STIGMA: Questions abound on hidden risks

A study obtained by USA TODAY reports that 13 of the 52 supplements (25%) purchased at various U.S. retailers contained small amounts of steroids and six (11.5%) had banned stimulants.

The study was overseen by Informed-Choice, a non-profit coalition of dietary supplements. Testing was conducted by HFL, a lab located in England.

"We were very surprised by these results," said Dave Hall, CEO of HFL.
A study by the International Olympic Committee conducted from 2000 to 2002 showed 18.8% of the 240 supplements purchased in the USA contained steroids.

Officials from Informed-Choice and HFL declined to reveal which supplements were tested or where they were purchased, but Hall said some of best-selling brands were randomly selected, mostly from mall-based stores.

"We didn't go after products that appeared to be dubious," Hall said. "We wanted to test products that were standard and mainstream, something a high school kid would be attracted to."

John Barnes, the football coach at Los Alamitos (Calif.) High, was alarmed at the results.
"It's not good if a kid can find these things in a health-food store," he said. "As a father and a coach, you think anything they'd find there would be perfectly fine, and then you find out that it's banned. This is something I'm going to start talking to my players about right away."

Of the 10 categories of supplements tested, testosterone boosters were flagged the most often. Six of the nine boosters contained androstenedione, a steroid precursor used by Mark McGwire en route to setting the single-season home run mark in 1998.

Andro was made illegal nearly three years ago.

Kelly Hoffman, executive director of Informed-Choice, said most banned substances are finding their way into products inadvertently — for instance, when manufacturers fail to properly clean equipment. She said raw materials imported from Asia, India and Eastern Europe also can be contaminated.

The Food and Drug Administration is taking on a more active role in policing supplements, including taking reports of adverse effects of the products starting Dec. 22.

THE SAFETY ZONE
If you decide to use natural methods to ENHANCE YOUR PERFORMANCE as discussed below please contact us bunnysam@bestselfusa.com before purchasing anything. There are lots of poor quality products out there and looking for a bargain in this field is usually a mistake. For example:

Warning: There is much misinformation and lack of knowledge about vitamin supplementation. Below is a helpful summary of research done by Dr. Michael Pazdon, at the University of New Hampshire. His report is as follows:

“Of the vitamin supplements being marketed in the United States today, we found that there are basically three types (1) Synthetic (chemical), (2) Crystallized (heat processed) and (3) Lyophilized (low temperature dehydration).

These three types were tested by chromatograms prepared by the method of Pfeiffer (BioDynamics 50, 2t), with slight modification.

1. SYNTHETIC: A chemical vitamin isolate made from inorganic materials, i.e., petroleum by-products. Sold mainly in drugstores, these vitamins act as drugs in the body. They may set up toxic reactions, and thereby rob the body of its own storehouse of antibodies.

2. CRYSTALLIZED: Commonly labeled “organic” or “natural”, these vitamins are isolates derived at least partly from a whole food (organic) source by a High Temperature process (products need be only 10% organic to legally carry the label “natural ingredients”). Most of the live enzymes necessary for absorption into the body have been destroyed in this type of vitamin. (Example: If we labeled a dead horse “natural and organic”, our label would be correct. If we wanted to ride him to town, however, we would be out of luck. “Organic and Natural” do not necessarily mean “alive”.) This is the type of vitamin sold in some drug stores and most health food stores.

3. LYOPHILIZED: Whole food is dehydrated by a cold process (similar to freeze-drying), preserving the complex of vitamins, bioflavinoids and enzymes found in nature. Enzymes necessary for absorption into the body remain intact. The only company we could find marketing this type of supplement is Shaklee Corporation"

Sports Nutrition is an Art and a Science
Hat tip to: Wayne Pedranti
Just mentioning the term “Sports Nutrition” conjures up images of muscle bound body builders in a gym. This image has partially been created by the marketing industry that has portrayed products for weight loss and bulking in this manner. However, the truth of the matter is that sports nutrition is not just for the body builders. It is in fact for anyone who breaths, moves, eats, or lives. It is a lifestyle that leads to optimum health. Sports Nutrition involves what and how we eat, what nutritional supplements we take, and how we exercise. This has lead some individuals to refer to sports Nutrition as a Art and a science.

According to Cory Holly, the art “consists of nourishing an active body with high quality food and natural health products in a skillful, safe, and consistent manner. (Holly).” This does not only apply to what we eat, but includes how, when, and where as well. What natural health products (NHPS) we use is driven by many variables. Some of these include metabolic status and state, athletic goals, training volume and intensity, body composition, injury status, lifestyle, ethnic origin, blood type, and acid alkaline balance. The new science of nutrigenomics (Holly, Sports Nutrition Update Volume 8N5C: Interview with Michael Colgan, 2009) further suggests that the foods we eat and NHPs we consume is decided by our genetic makeup. The art of sports nutrition is the ability to balance all of these variables to achieve your health, fitness, and nutritional goals

Understanding the ART of Sports nutrition is not even possible without understanding the science of sports nutrition. The science tells us the how and why. Through observation and experimentation, we have found out how the use of NHPs affects the health, recovery, and performance in athletes when combined with controlled exercise.

The precise application of the art and science of sports nutrition can give athletes the foundation to meet their fitness and athletic goals and at the same time remain injury free. The art and the science go hand in hand. Both are needed to be applied.

Taking Fitness to Another Level

Men’s fitness is the focus of this Health Sciences Bulletin. Indeed, everyone - and especially all men - should make a special effort to improve fitness by making healthy lifestyle choices, eating a balanced diet, supplementing wisely, and of course, exercising daily.

Taking advantage of these tips, adapted from the American Heart Association, can help you build a successful fitness program:

• If you’re overweight, been sedentary for a long time, or have a chronic health problem, see your doctor for a medical evaluation before beginning a physical activity program.

• Choose activities that are fun, not exhausting. Add variety. Develop a repertoire of several activities that you can enjoy so exercise never seems boring or routine.

• Wear comfortable, properly fitted footwear and clothing appropriate for the weather and the activity.

• Find a convenient time and place to do activities. Try to make it a habit, but be flexible. Use music to keep yourself entertained.

• Surround yourself with supportive people. Share your activity time with others.

• Don't overdo it. Slowly increase the duration and intensity of your activities as you become more fit, and over time, work up to exercising for 30-60 minutes.

New Study Shows Post-Exercise Protein Increases Muscle Mass and Strength

A new research study showing the benefits of ingesting protein after a workout for increasing muscle mass and strength was published in the May 2008 issue of Fitness Management, (www.fitnessmanagement.com) a publication for the fitness industry.
Study authors Wayne L. Westcott, PhD, William F Martin, PhD, Rita La Rosa Loud, and Susan Stoddard conducted the research at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy, MA. The following is a study summary and the published manuscript will be available shortly on the Shaklee MD Resources website.

Background of the Study
In the last decade, significant research has been published relative to protein supplementation, recovery from exercise, and muscle development. Clinical research demonstrated that a protein-carbohydrate complex consumed immediately after exercise enhanced recovery from exercise when compared to consuming carbohydrate alone. More recent work has shown significantly greater gains in muscle mass and strength when protein is ingested immediately following resistance exercise.

After age 35, adults may lose 3-8 percent of their muscle mass per decade. Evidence suggests that an average muscle loss of 5 pounds per decade is associated with a 3-percent per decade reduction in resting metabolism which can predispose individuals to a dramatic increase in body fat. So it makes sense that strength training programs might be an important factor in weight management. In fact, Dr. Westcott’s previous research has demonstrated the ability of previously sedentary adults to gain muscle and elevate resting metabolic rate which could result in the ability to expend an additional 100 calories per day in a 175 lb individual!

Study Design
This study was undertaken to examine the effects of a 23-week moderate strength training program, with and without the supplemental protein, on body composition in a group of 68 adults. Average age was 59 years and exercise frequency was 2 to 3 days per week. The exercise protocol was adapted from the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines and included standard use of 11 weight training machines with appropriate increases in exercise resistance and post-exercise stretches. Subjects also performed 20 minutes of endurance exercise.

All participants performed the same exercise program in the research facility under close supervision. Forty-six subjects completed the 23-week program; Twenty-four participants consumed the protein drink (Cinch™ Shake, Shaklee Corp., Pleasanton, CA) following their training session and 22 did not consume the drink, nor did they receive a placebo control. The drink was prepared by mixing 1.5 servings in water and provided approximately 270 calories, 4.5g fat, 35g carbohydrate, and 24g protein. No reasons were reported for the 22 subjects that dropped out of the study.

Study Results
After 23 weeks of moderate training, all 46 subjects showed significant improvements in body composition, including a 4.7 pound gain in lean muscle weight and 7.0 pound loss in fat weight Subjects ingesting the post-exercise Shake increased lean weight by 5.5 pounds and decreased fat weight by 9.0 pounds; a 14.5-pound improvement in body composition. Those not receiving the supplemental Shake increased lean weight by 3.9 pounds and decreased fat weight by 4.9 pounds; an 8.8-pound improvement in body composition. As shown in Figure 1, participants consuming the post-exercise protein shake added 1.6 pounds more lean weight and lost 4.1 pounds more fat weight than the no-supplement subjects.

Discussion
This study confirms the impact of a fitness program for improving body composition and anthropometric measurements. Therefore, it appears that previously sedentary adults can attain significant and consistent muscle gains and fat losses over the first 6 months of a standard exercise program.

Another finding was the greater body composition improvement seen in the participants who consumed the protein drink immediately after their workout. Subjects who consumed the post-exercise shake gained about 25 percent more lean weight and lost 50 percent more body fat. This observation reconfirms the finding that supplying the body with extra protein and carbohydrate following a combined strength/endurance exercise session promotes addition of lean tissue and loss of body fat. At present, it’s thought that protein ingestion post-exercise increases the rate of muscle proteins synthesis, which increases the amount of muscle over time.

Practical Application
This study confirms that a standard exercise program is effective for increasing lean mass and decreasing fat mass. But it’s even more interesting that consuming a post-exercise protein drink promoted favorable body composition changes (increased lean weight and decreased fat weight) associated with the standard strength/endurance exercise program.

Make strength and endurance exercise part of your regular routine, and enjoy a protein-carbohydrate shake immediately after exercise for faster recovery, to help build and maintain muscle mass, and to decrease fat mass

Natural Bodybuilding
In response to the query about natural body building and Shaklee products, I will provide some
of my own insight and recommend that you also contact Bobby Brandenburg in Fayetteville, NC.
He was a NPC drug free Atlantic Coast bodybuilding champion.

To give you some background, I am a Shaklee Senior Supervisor and a certified strength and
conditioning specialist. At this point, I will not accept anyone for training unless they use
Shaklee products. I can say without reservation, those people that I have trained over the years
who have used Shaklee products are more consistent in their gains, suffer fewer injuries,
and recuperate more rapidly than the people who do not use Shaklee products as the base of their
dietary/nutrition program. I also strongly believe that it is my general responsibility both as a
Shaklee Independent Distributor and as strength and conditioning specialist to strive to optimize
people's health. If I am training someone and that person is not in, or striving to obtain optimal
health, that person can never attain the true peak performance of which he/she is capable. If a
person is not on a strong Shaklee nutrition program, he/she is not coming close to optimizing
his/her health. Consequently, that person is not optimizing his/her athletic performance.

My own introduction to Shaklee was a consequence of meeting Dr. Gary Mendelson through the
vehicle of the martial arts. It was 1990, Gary as a 2d Dan was an instructor and he and I began a
discussion about nutrition. At the time, I had been involved in investigating and using nutrition
products/supplements since 1973 with the focus of improving sports and combat performance.
When Gary mentioned Shaklee, I told him that I had never heard of the company but because I
respected him I would play his silly game. I started with Instant Protein, Vita Lea, Physique,
Herb-Lax, and Performance. Four weeks later, my bench press was up 40 pounds for a personal
best, my squat was up 60 pounds for a personal best, I was doing straight leg deadlifts on a
bench with 80 pound dumbbells and in the down position my wrists were on line with the bottom
of my feet (another personal best), my body-fat dropped from 11% to 9%, my energy level
increased, and I was not hungry all the time.

Now that you have my background, here are some perspectives and information. First, I have not
had success in talking with gym owners about Shaklee products as they have difficulty
understanding the business at a basic level much less the multilevel aspect of it. The ones with
whom I have spoken have perceived that they could not make enough immediate money. This
could have been my explanation but I am not wholly convinced of that. Secondly, because they
have not seen glossy ads in a variety of muscle head magazines, they have a hard time opening
their minds. Given that, let us take a quick look at the specific questions.

Instant Protein has a ratio of 2 grams protein to 1 gram carbohydrate. There is no other protein
source which is better assimilated by the body. Back to the basic health issue (anticancer,
cholesterol lowering, etc), everyone should have a minimum of 30 grams (3 of our clear plastic
scoops, item code 50251) daily and preferably 60 grams of soy protein daily. An excellent
article by Derek Cornelius, owner of Syntrax Innovations Inc, in the Dec 98 IronMan magazine
pointed out the advantages of Soy proteins vs Whey. Some excerpts from that article ... "every
100 grams of whey protein provides 20.1 grams of branch-chain amino acids (BCAA) and 4.9
grams of glutamine---the amino acid bodybuilders can't seem tp get enough of. For every 100
grams of soy protein you get 18.1 grams of BCAAs -- only two grams less than whey --
but you get a whopping 10.5 grams of glutamine, more than double what you get with whey.
Glutamine aids in muscle protein synthesis, and because it exists the muscle after intense
training, body builders need as much glutamine as they can get. Soy is definitely glutamine-rich,
which makes it a bodybuilding supersupplement.

Soy also has a number of other hard-to-beat benefits for hard training bodybuilders as well as
health-conscious people in the general population:

1) It's very inexpensive (my comment -- you cannot get a better value than Shaklee Instant
Protein)
2) It has the highest Protein Digestability Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS), which is
quickly taking over from biological value (BV) as the most accurate measure of protein quality.
3) It's very soluable if processed correctly (my comment -- No problem there)
4) It's bland, which is a good thing because it doesn't take much flavoring to make it palatable.
5) It improves kidney function.
6) It's anticarcinogenic.
7) It's anti-estrogenic, which may help prevent the aromatization of pro-hormones.
8) It lowers low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the bad cholesterol, and raises the high-density
lipoprotein (HDL), the good cholesterol.
9) It improves thyroid function.
10) It's not an animal protein, so vegetarians can use it to augment their nutrition.

Soy definitely has some outstanding and unique advantages over whey, especially in the muscle
building department.

Moving on to Physique, I suggest that you obtain Dr. Bruce Miller's Physique comparison sheet
and the Physique amino acid profile from Shaklee Field Services. Physique is an amazing
product and the research is often quoted in muscle magazines without crediting the source while
others promote their products on the back of Shaklee research. Your body builders likely do not
realize the importance of the insulin response post training; however, they should be well
impressed by the percent BCAA content of Physique. Based on my reading, I currently use the
following formula to determine the optimal post work amount of Physique to use after heavy
training. Lean Body Mass (LBM) in lbs divided by 2.2 = LBM in kilograms(Kg); LBM in Kg =
carbs required; carbs required divided by 9.5 = scoops (item # 50251) of Physique. Physique is
optimally taken within five minutes post workout. Taken more than 30 minutes post workout,
Physique will not provide the anabolic response. Timeliness with regard to Physique usage is
critical. Physique works for both the strength/bodybuilding athlete as well as the endurance
athlete.

See if your natural bodybuilders will use Performance for several workouts and get their
feedback. I have yet to have anyone not get improved workouts. Optimally, it is used starting 15-
30 minutes before starting the work out. Understand that they will likely want to cut back as they
approach competition. Bobby Brandenburg could likely give you more refined information
on that end of things. Performance's blend of electrolytes will help prevent water retention and
alfalfa, DTX, and Herb-lax will also facilitate in that area.

Muscle Strength and Recovery
One important ingredient necessary to aid in bodybuilding is a broad-spectrum
natural protein supplement that will provide the body with the needed building
blocks to increase strength and muscle size without risking an excessive amount
of any single amino acid. Nutritional experts prefer complete protein
supplements which supply all of the essential amino acids in concentrated form.
Shaklee’s Muscle “Strength and Recovery” drink was specifically designed as a
Sports Nutrition Product to maximize training efforts.

• It is a healthy, drug-free way to build lean muscle mass
• It helps you to recover more quickly from a workout
• It is designed to stimulate your own natural, anabolic body-building
process
• It gives a faster energy return, so you can maintain a more strenuous
workout
• If you are working hard for body building or strength, it creates OPTIMAL
conditions for maximum muscle mass and strength development.

Even though this phenomenal product was designed for athletes, it is useful to
anyone who has a desire to maintain excellent muscle strength, mass and tone
(see end notes on the benefits to senior citizens).

To better understand the product, let’s review how muscle strength and mass
are formed.
• When you work a muscle hard, you actually break down muscle tissue.
This is called a “catabolic state”.
• The muscle then rebuilds itself larger and stronger than it was before. This
building stage is called the “anabolic state”.
• After a workout your body needs to rebuild and restore energy to torndown,
exhausted muscles. With the right nutrition at the right time you
can help accelerate and maximize this process.
• Research shows that what an athlete consumes AFTER A WORKOUT may
be as important to muscle building as the workout itself.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to move the anabolic, or building and recovering
stage of muscle into high gear without the use of steroids or other drugs (that
have unpleasant short-term and dangerous long-term effects). That is exactly
what Shaklee Physique does. Taking Physique immediately after a workout and
then 2 hours later helps athletes of all skill levels and anyone who requires muscle
repair to experience recovery, muscle gain, and restored muscle energy.

How to use Physique
• Finish each workout with a serving of Physique.
• Drink a second serving two hours later
• For really intense workouts or for weight gain, users should have a third
serving at bedtime.

Physique can be used in conjunction with any strenuous exercise, but it will help
to build muscles the best when used in a program of weight training combined
with aerobic exercise.

What does it contain?
Physique contains a unique protein and carbohydrate blend called Bio-Build.
This is a precise formulation specifically designed to increase the anabolic
hormone in your body for an enhanced body-building state. Once the anabolic
state has shifted into high gear, the Bio-Build of Physique is designed to feed your
muscles easily available glucose and amino acids needed for three things:
1. Rebuild muscle stronger
2. Increase muscle mass
3. Restore energy to fatigued muscles

Physique is a banana-flavoured powder that can be mixed with water, juice or
milk to form a DELICIOUS low-fat, nutritious drink to repair muscles after workout.
contains high-quality milk protein and whey protein isolates: it has a Protein
Efficiency Rating (PER) of 3.0, equivalent to casein or milk protein, making it
excellent for the repair or building of muscle tissue. These proteins are
particularly good sources of the branched-chain amino acids, valine, leucine,
and isoleucine, which are present in a relatively high percentage in muscle fibre
protein. Physique does not contain individual or “free-form” amino acids such as
L-tryptophan – it contains only whole proteins with their naturally-occurring amino
acids.

Although it is formulated with whey protein and milk protein isolates, Physique
contains no milk sugar. As a result, when mixed with water or juice, Physique is
lactose-free.

Physique is also low in fat – when made with water, juice or skim milk, it contains
less than 1 gram of fat per serving.

To ensure that it stays fresh, Physique contains the “ShakleeGuard” antioxidant
system … a blend of ascorbyl palmitate, mixed tocopherols and rosemary
extract that helps prevent the oxidation of sensitive ingredients. It contains no
artificial sweeteners or flavours, and most importantly, clinical testing has shown it
really works.

Clinical Test Results
In one of the clinical studies, nine elite cyclists rode to exhaustion with an
alternating workload that reflected race-like conditions. After the ride they were
given one of three drinks:
1. Physique
2. A carbohydrate-only drink
3. A protein-only drink

The results confirmed that the carbohydrate-protein combination of Physique
elicited a greater insulin response in the blood than the carbohydrate or protein
supplements alone.

The study also measured each athlete’s muscle glycogen level … the body’s
store of carbohydrate. The Physique drinkers clearly came out ahead of those
who had both other drinks. In fact, the carbohydrate-protein combination of
Physique proved to be so effective that it was patented by Shaklee under the
name Bio-Build. Its unique carbohydrate-to-protein ratio does two things:

1. It helps the pancreas to produce more insulin after exercise than either
protein or carbohydrate alone
2. It also helps to control blood glucose levels so there aren’t peaks and
valleys in energy level.

Increased insulin production puts the body into an anabolic, or tissue-growing
state. Insulin b\drives the branched-chain amino acids and glucose into the
cells to increase lean muscle building and restore strength.
Other Recommendations:

The proper absorption of protein is very complicated and can be influenced by
several factors. Enzymes are essential for protein absorption, so a diet including
enzyme-rich raw fruits and vegetables is important. It is also recommended that
the athlete provide a “guaranteed” source of all essential vitamins and minerals
by taking Shaklee’s Multiple Vitamin/Mineral Supplement – Vita-Lea.

Shaklee’s Glucose Regulation Complex is recommended along with Physique
immediately after a workout. The ingredients, especially chromium, spark the
anabolic state immediately after work.

Another substance which can assist in the proper absorption of protein is lecithin.
Physique ….. Highly Recommended for Seniors

The following report comes from Dr. Richard Brouse, Sunnyside Health Center
and Chiropractic Clinic in Clackamas, Oregon:

“As you know, the nutritional needs of mature individuals is unique.
• Digestion, muscle mass and hormonal regulation tend to decrease.
• Body fat and blood cholesterol levels tend to increase.
• Cardiovascular efficiency, blood sugar regulation and energy levels tend
to decrease.

These changes seem to be related to the aging process and made us ask the
question …. ‘What factor seems to have the greatest effect on aging?’
After two years of recommending Physique to 210 elderly patients (men and
women between 65 and 84) at this clinic, we noticed some amazing results that
we would like to share with you …..

1. 72% of people over 65 years of age who began using Physique daily had
an increase in energy and more muscle mass after six months
2. Sugar regulation I those who had been hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic
returned to normal in 56% of the cases within 3 months after starting daily
use of Physique
3. 60% of all elderly patients following our recommended exercises had less
muscle and joint symptoms within 3 months after daily use of Physique.

These findings can only suggest that Shaklee Physique is a very useful addition to
the nutritional program of the elderly population who are physically active and
taking positive steps to maintain their health. When maximizing the diet and
regularly supplementing, significant benefits can be gained by the elderly using
Physique.

We are very excited about these findings and hope that mature people and not
just yong people will take advantage of this outstanding product.”
Others who would Benefit for Physique:

ANYONE suffering from muscle fatigue would benefit immensely from the daily
use of Physique
• people who suffer with fibromyalgia,
• people who suffer with chronic fatigue syndrome
• builders
• anyone whose work makes heavy physical demands on the muscles
• etc.

TESTIMONIALS
Annika Sorenstam
The Mar/Apr 2003 issue of "Golf for Women" features Annika Sorenstam, the world's best female golfer, gives credit to Shaklee's Physique as her recovery drink. To quote directly from the article:

While some detractors have whispered the dirty word steroids to explain her gains in strength, Sorenstam's husband, David Esch, says it is simply the result of hard work. "She takes a carbohydrate-and-protein-replacement drink called Physique that's made by Shaklee," Esch says. "It helps her body recover faster from workouts so she can work out more.

Swimming a mile at 60 with Shaklee

I am not a young athlete but I am young at being an athlete. I am turning 60 this year and decided to return to my love of swimming. I tore my miniscus cartilage in my knee and so I can't do walking, so after 20 years of little exercise and no swimming, I returned to the pool in January. I mix my Shaklee Energizing Protein in lime Performance and grab a strip of The Basics and off to the pool I go. I started with 250 yards on January 10th and by the end of February, I achieved my goal of a mile (1800 yards). I am swimming that 3 days per week.

One day this past week, I got busy with phone calls etc and when my husband said let's go, I left the house without my protein and performance and didn't realize it until I had swam about 250 yards and the fatigue began to take over. That day, I had to push myself just to do the 1\2 mile of 900 yards. I had to drag myself out of the pool and could not wait to get home and revitalize myself with my drink. I could not do this type of exercise without these two products.

Thank You Shaklee.

Violet Mies – Champion Ice Dancer at age 66

Violet Mies passed her final test and thus earned her Gold Medal levelin pairs ice dance. She accomplished this on Saturday,17 June 2000. I was most fortunate to be there and see her perform. This makes Violet the eldest person to earn the Gold Medal level. She is 66 years young.

You will recall that you interviewed her for your tape on Sports Nutrition that headlined Scott Higgins. She has faithfully stayed on Shaklee nutrition products and been dedicated and consistent with her training. She displayed much more power on the ice in this test than in her

previous test and consequently she and her partner were able to use the entire rink and perform at higher speed both of which make a program more fluid. Needless to say I was thrilled to see everything we had worked on in the gym translating to performance on the ice.

In closely following the nutrition recommendations I had made, which as you know included a number of Shaklee products (Instant Protein, Optiflora, Vita lea, Carotomax, B Complex, Vita C500, Vita E Plus, Calcium-Magnesium, Zinc, Formula I, Lecithin, Echinacea, Herb Lax, Performance, Physique, and Carbo-Crunch. In the non-nutritional area she uses Basic L, Basic I, and the Enfuselle SPF30 when she hits the tennis courts or her walk-run sessions), Violet has brought her weight down from about 135 to between 112-115, the weight at which she tested on Saturday. More importantly, her body fat has dropped by between 8-10% and all the while she has been getting progressively stronger. She fits in skating outfits that she has not been

able to get into for 10 years and when she had her bone density tested the doctor was amazed that it had increased. Needless to say, it has been a thrilling trek to Violet's pinnacle of skating success. She and I will now chart a new course in the gym. Will keep you informed.

Enjoy your day!

World Cup Skier Wins With Shaklee

Dear Mr. Ferguson,

Hi. I just got back from the Good Will Games where I won the silver medal in dual moguls and the bronze in single moguls. It was definitely my best contest to date. Did you see it on television? Both of the competitions were televised live on TNT last Saturday and Sunday. I think Shaklee helped out a lot on Sunday which was the dual mogul competition. On a dual mogul contest day we have to train really hard in the morning so we know both of the lines, then we have to ski four or five duals to win. This requires a lot of endurance but at the end of the day I had tons of energy left. I could have done the whole thing over again. At the start of the season I was in really bad shape physically because a back injury in late July prevented me from working out my lower body like I needed to. I was actually worried that I was going to blow out my knee at the first US Team camp because my leg muscles were so weak. I also wasn't sure if my back would hold up. I took it easy though and played it smart, but the smartest thing I did was to put all of my faith into the Shaklee products. I really don't think I would have won two medals at the Good Will Games without Shaklee and I really appreciate all that you've done for me. Ask Scott, this is all too true. So, thank you very much for all your help. Shaklee is the best.

Sincerely,
Ryan Riley

nothing to make the podium! Take a look at the picture on the left and you will have a small

idea of what it is like to stare down the Blackcomb, B.C mogul course; home to next year’s

World Freestyle Championships. Did I mention the bumps are three to four feet tall?

To help gain an edge over the tough international

competition, various members of the USFST (United States Freestyle

Ski Team) mogul team sought private support from Shaklee

Coordinators for the 1999-2000 season. Thanks to the vision of

Senior Master Coordinator Bob Ferguson various Shaklee leaders

have secured some big time skiing names.

Evan Dybvig a 1998 Olympian hailing from Tumbridge,

Vermont and nicknamed the “Vermonster” is part of the SASP

(Shaklee Athlete Support Program) program sponsored by Senior

Master Coordinator, George Shaw. Another great name Caleb

“Mogul” Martin, Telluride, Colorado, and presently ranked third in

the World is part of the SASP has been sponsored by Senior Master

Coordinator Peter Christoff.

Additionally, upcoming World Cups stars Ryan Riley, Steamboat Springs, Colorado,

sponsored by the Fergusons and Toby Dawson, Vail, Colorado, sponsored by Senior Master

Coordinators Linda and Donald Causey, are also with the program. Serious about

maintaining his longevity and prowess in the sport of mogul skiing, dual mogul specialist

and Freestyle World Cup veteran Garth Hager, Bothell Washington and Justine Van Houte,

Telluride, Colorado, sponsored by Senior Master Coordinators Frank and Cindy Frey are

also making the Shaklee Sports Nutrition line an integral part of their training and

competitive program.

The sport of Freestyle is composed of mogul and inverted aerial skiing. The mogul

competitions are run in two formats, a singles competition, and dual competition. Skiers

compete both on a NorAm or North American (Development) and World Cup Level. The

toughest and most elite skiers compete on the FIS Freestyle World Cup. The mogul events

require each athlete to ski a 220m course completing two jumps of varying difficulty. Each

athlete is judged on overall time i.e., how fast each completes the course, their turns-how

technically proficient each turn was, and the height, distance, and degree of difficulty of each

jump or “air”.

Thus the judging is broken down as follows 50% form/body

position or turns, 25% air, and 25% speed. Ryan Riley (Right)

illustrates perfect position during a “Heli-Iron Cross” air maneuver

in competition. The Duals competition is predominantly a race to the

bottom of the course. However competitors are still scored

by the single standards.

Garth Hager (lower left) shows us how to tear

a duals course. Garth a.k.a. “G-Money”, sponsored

by Senior Key Coordinator Dan Henderson, had a big finish last

week at the Sprint Bumps and Jumps Series finishing second in the

duals format event against a stacked international field.

Why is sports nutrition so important and why are some members of the U.S.F.S.T

mogul team using Shaklee? When an athlete is racing at an elite level, it’s all about finetuning.

A solid well-planned sports nutrition program is part of the tuning process. Let’s

take the area of post exercise recovery for the SASP team.

During the season with on-snow and physical conditioning training volumes high, it

is essential; absolutely critical, that athletes maximize the recovery time between all facets of

training and competition. The faster an athlete can promote inter and intra

workout/competition recovery, the harder and more consistent can training and

performance can be on a daily basis.

Moguls, a.k.a. the “motor cross” of skiing is no easy task on the lightest training

days. Athletes regularly take 8-10 runs daily in pre-competition training. The high impact of

hitting four-foot bumps coupled with the intense strength demands and forces off the snow

easily create physiological havoc on the fittest skiers. Additionally this does not account for

the twenty- hour travel days that sometimes take place prior to the first day of official

training. The repeated depletion of muscle glycogen stores and hydration can be even bigger

competitors than the field if athletes are not following a customized nutritional strategy

geared toward optimizing performance day to day and training session to training session.

“It’s Physique time”, stated Evan Dybvig after a recent gym session at the

Winterstart World Cup in Whistler, B.C. The importance of that first twenty-minute

window to optimize recovery continues to drive Evan and other members to keep pace with

an aggressive workout to workout strategy using Shaklee products; most important of which

is Physique. That’s the kind of attitude and team accountability which will help keep placing

Evan Dybvig (below left) and others on the World Cup podium as in the opener in

Tandadalden, Sweden November 27T.H...

Make no mistake, just like in competition, these guys have to work to make recovery

happen. Many times a mogul course is high up on the mountain or a substantial distance

from the lodging. It may take thirty to forty-five minutes for an athlete to get from the

course to the bottom of the mountain with multiple chairs or gondolas. This is not an ideal

situation for recovery. The time it takes an athlete to download off the mountain or to travel

back to the hotel is often too late.

Our strategy to optimize recovery is to bring Physique pre-mixed and ready to drink

immediately after athlete finishes training and competition. When Caleb Martin takes his

physique prior to the download, he is ensuring his body gets what it needs immediately so he

can perform at his best the nest day or later in the evening during a in-season conditioning

session. The team members have a lso been successful at implementing other Shaklee’s

products like Performance in a variety of competitive and training situations. We’ll talk more

about those and what’s it’s like to travel with the U.S. team in future updates.
