'Green' Spiral Light Bulbs Linked to Cancer

'Green' Light Bulbs Linked to Cancer
By Martin Gould

Spiral energy-saving light bulbs could cause cancer, German scientists have found.

They say the compact fluorescent lamp bulbs should not be left on for long as they send poison into the atmosphere when switched on, according to a report in Britain’s Daily Telegraph.

And in particular, the scientists warn, they should be kept away from people’s heads due to an “electrical smog” of phenol, naphthalene and styrene.

“For such carcinogenic substances it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment,” warned Peter Braun, who carried out research in Berlin.

Fellow researcher Andreas Kirchner added: “They should not be used in unventilated areas and definitely not in the proximity of the head.”

Earlier this year an Israeli report suggested CFL bulbs could trigger breast cancer and there have been fears about the environmental damage they could cause if dumped in landfills.

Despite those worries — and the fact they can cost up to six times as much as traditional incandescent bulbs — the CFL bulbs are in wide use worldwide. They are said to cut energy costs significantly and have a much longer lifespan.

Congress passed a measure in 2007 to phase out incandescent bulbs completely by 2014.

How Supermodel Gisele Bundchen "Infuriated Cancer Experts"

How Supermodel Gisele Bundchen "Infuriated Cancer Experts"

http://www.iknowhair.com/wp-content/uploads/Gisele-Bundchen.jpg
(Mercola.com) Researchers at the Environmental Working Group, a Washington-based nonprofit, released their annual report claiming nearly half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A and its derivatives, retinol and retinyl palmitate.
Furthermore, the FDA has known about the dangers of vitamin A in sunscreens since ordering a study 10 years ago, but has done nothing to alert the public of the dangers.
"Retinyl palmitate was selected by (FDA's) Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition for photo-toxicity and photocarcinogenicity testing based on the increasingly widespread use of this compound in cosmetic retail products for use on sun-exposed skin," said an October 2000 report by the National Toxicology Program.
According to AOL news, other problems with sunscreens include:
  • The use of the hormone-disrupting chemical oxybenzone, which penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream.
  • Overstated claims about performance.
  • The lack of needed regulations and oversight by the Food and Drug Administration.
Also, be careful where you discuss the danger involved with sunscreens.  Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen has reportedly "infuriated cancer experts" by describing sunscreen as "poison".

US Meat and Poultry Is Widely Contaminated With Drug-Resistant Staph Bacteria, Study Finds

US Meat and Poultry Is Widely Contaminated With Drug-Resistant Staph Bacteria, Study Finds

ScienceDaily (Apr. 15, 2011) — Drug-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria linked to a wide range of human diseases, are present in meat and poultry from U.S. grocery stores at unexpectedly high rates, according to a nationwide study by the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen).

Nearly half of the meat and poultry samples -- 47 percent -- were contaminated with S. aureus, and more than half of those bacteria -- 52 percent -- were resistant to at least three classes of antibiotics, according to the study published April 15 in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
This is the first national assessment of antibiotic resistant S. aureus in the U.S. food supply. And, DNA testing suggests that the food animals themselves were the major source of contamination.
Although Staph should be killed with proper cooking, it may still pose a risk to consumers through improper food handling and cross-contamination in the kitchen.
Researchers collected and analyzed 136 samples -- covering 80 brands -- of beef, chicken, pork and turkey from 26 retail grocery stores in five U.S. cities: Los Angeles, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Flagstaff and Washington, D.C.
"For the first time, we know how much of our meat and poultry is contaminated with antibiotic-resistant Staph, and it is substantial," said Lance B. Price, Ph.D., senior author of the study and Director of TGen's Center for Food Microbiology and Environmental Health.
"The fact that drug-resistant S. aureus was so prevalent, and likely came from the food animals themselves, is troubling, and demands attention to how antibiotics are used in food-animal production today," Dr. Price said.
Densely-stocked industrial farms, where food animals are steadily fed low doses of antibiotics, are ideal breeding grounds for drug-resistant bacteria that move from animals to humans, the report says.
"Antibiotics are the most important drugs that we have to treat Staph infections; but when Staph are resistant to three, four, five or even nine different antibiotics -- like we saw in this study -- that leaves physicians few options," Dr. Price said.
"The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria -- including Staph -- remains a major challenge in clinical medicine," said Paul S. Keim, Ph.D., Director of TGen's Pathogen Genomics Division and Director of the Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics at Northern Arizona University (NAU).
"This study shows that much of our meat and poultry is contaminated with multidrug-resistant Staph. Now we need to determine what this means in terms of risk to the consumer," said Dr. Keim, a co-author of the paper.
The U.S. government routinely surveys retail meat and poultry for four types of drug-resistant bacteria, but S. aureus is not among them. The paper suggests that a more comprehensive inspection program is needed.
S. aureus can cause a range of illnesses from minor skin infections to life-threatening diseases, such as pneumonia, endocarditis and sepsis.
The study was supported through a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts as part of The Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming.

Health Sciences Seminar - Saturday, April 16th from 1-3PM

Are you exposing your children to a TOXIC BREW at home?

Exposure to many common household cleaners may be making you & your children sick!

“We are conducting an enormous experiment on our children. People assume that if it is on the store shelf, it has been tested and it is safe, but you can not make that assumption…”
Kathy Cooper, Sr Environmental Law Researcher

You are invited to attend our
monthly Health Sciences Seminar
Saturday, April 16 from 1-3PM

10202 Vanderbilt Dr
,NE corner @
102nd Ave
Naples, FL 34108

We will be looking at some of the N hidden dangers N lurking under our sinks in products like:
, 1-3PM
N  Air Freshener (aerosol)     N Automatic Dishwashing Liquid and Powder     N Bleach (liquid and powdered)
N Carpet Shampoo                N Drain Cleaner                                                N Fabric Softener Sheets
     N Mouthwash                       N Perfume/Cologne                                           N Window Cleaner

Despite the chemical industry uproar and legal threats, we have a copy of the video
which cleaning product manufacturers DO NOT want you to see!

In honor of EARTH DAY, come & view the shocking documentary:

NTOXIC BREW N

Learn what we can do to be responsible caretakers for our loved ones and our earth!

We seem to be a society obsessed with cleanliness. We want our whites whiter and our bathrooms and kitchens hospital-grade disinfected. Industry has answered: today's cleaning products promise faster, easier, and better results with no scrubbing. But is our clean-freak streak harming our kids? In this video, we ask several experts, including a toxicologist, a senior researcher, a prominent pediatrician, an indoor air quality specialist, and an expert on chemical hazardous information. You'll be shocked at what they tell us.

Many childhood illnesses are rising at a very worrisome rate. Respiratory illness is now the leading cause of admission to hospitals for children. Childhood asthma has jumped by 400 percent over the last 20 years. Learning problems like ADD are on the rise. After injuries, cancer is now the leading cause of death in children between the ages of 5 and 9. Incredibly, most of the 80,000 chemicals in common use today have never been checked for harmful effects to our children's immature brains and immune systems.

We will help you find healthier alternatives for you, your family, and our planet.

Another Reason Not to Trust Snopes. Please Do Your Own Research!

Another Reason Not to Trust Snopes.  Please do Your Own Research!

So I get this email from my sister-in-law that has the same flavor as emails that tell me Captain Kangaroo is a war hero and Mr. Green Jeans is a professional wrestler named “The Masked Menace.”

Here is that email:

Aspartame  - SWEET POISON.....
In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick.  She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major chore.  It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much pain.

By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications.   The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her.   She was in so much pain, and so sick she just knew she was dying.

She put her house, bank accounts, life insurance, etc., in her oldest daughter's name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of.

She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22nd.

On March 19, I called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS.

I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet soda?   She told me that she did.   As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment

I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda!   I e-mailed her an article my friend, a lawyer, had sent.   My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk!  The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but, she sure felt a lot better.

She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got home

Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed!  He is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of any kind.   In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda.. and literally dying a slow and miserable death.

When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning!   She is well on her way to a complete recovery.  And she is walking!   No wheelchair! This article saved her life…
If it says 'SUGAR FREE' on the label;   DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on 'ASPARTAME,' marketed as
'Nutra Sweet,'  'Equal,' and 'Spoonful.'
In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United States in 2001 there is an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus.  It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to be rampant.   I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.
I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous:   When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants.   The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus.

Many people were being diagnosed in error.   Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity is!

Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with
Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers.
The victim usually does not know that the Aspartame is the culprit.   He or she continues its use; irritating the lupus to such a degree that it may become a life-threatening condition.   We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet sodas.

In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms disappear. W we've seen many cases where vision loss re turned and hearing loss improved markedly.

This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia.   During a lecture, I said,  'If you are using ASPARTAME (
Nutra Sweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting, pains, numbness in your legs,
Cramps,
Vertigo,
Dizziness,
Headaches,
Tinnitus,
Joint pain,
Unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!'   People were jumping up during the lecture saying, 'I have some of these symptoms..  Is it reversible?'

Yes!

Yes!
Yes!
STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels!   Many products are fortified with it!   This is a serious problem.   Dr. Espart (one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be symptomatic for MS and during his recent visit to a hospice; a nurse stated that six of her friends, who were heavy
Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence!

Diet soda is
NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM (salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave carbohydrates.

It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight!

These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs.   Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin and is used primarily to preserve 'tissue specimens.'

Many products we use every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!

Dr. H. J. Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the
'diet products' and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an average of 19 pounds over a trial period.
Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics.   We found that some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with retinopathy, in fact, had symptoms caused by Aspartame.   The Aspartame drives the blood sugar out of control.   Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance.

Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE.   Especially with diabetics, the Aspartame passes the blood/brain barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons of the brain; causing various levels of brain damage,
Seizures, Depression, Manic depression, Panic attacks, Uncontrollable anger and rage.
Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics as well. Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behavior when these chemicals have been removed from their diet.

So called 'behavior modification prescription drugs' (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed.   Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place!

Most of these children were being 'poisoned' on a daily basis with the very foods that were 'better for them than sugar.'

It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of
diet Coke and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may be partially to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome.

Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause birth defects, i.e. mental retardation, if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy.   Children are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners.

There are many different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological disturbances talking about a plague of neurological diseases directly caused by the use of this deadly poison.'

Herein lies the problem:   There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame was included in 100 different products and strong objection was made concerning its use. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings, and still nothing has been done..
The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets.

Sadly, MONSANTO'S patent on Aspartame has EXPIRED!   There are now over 5,000 products on the market that contain this deadly chemical and there will be thousands more introduced.   Everybody wants a
'piece of the Aspartame pie.'
I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is.

And isn't it ironic that MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes Association, the American Dietetic Association and the Conference of the American College of Physicians?

This has been recently exposed in the New York Times.   These [organizations] cannot criticize any additives or convey their link to MONSANTO because they take money from the food industry and are required to endorse their products.

Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote and presented a bill that would require label warnings on products containing Aspartame, especially regarding pregnant women, children and infants.
The bill would also institute independent studies on the known dangers and the problems existing in the general population regarding seizures, changes in brain chemistry, neurological changes and behavioral symptoms.

The bill was killed.

It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for this, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting and uninformed public. Well, you're informed now!

Please e-mail
to your family and friends.

Thank you!

Now here is what Snopes had to say about this email:

Snopes cited the FDA as declaring that Aspartame was safe.  I don’t trust the FDA. (see “Dangerous Prescription” a PBS Front Line special http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/prescription/hazard/ ) but I don’t trust PBS either, since I don’t think it is safe to get news from a government supported source.

Then I noticed this sentence from my sister-in-laws email, “It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for this, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting and uninformed public.”  Being shocked that government sponsored news is biased, or that pharmaceutical and chemical lobbyists influence the FDA is like being shocked that gambling is happening in casinos, so I decided to consult some scientific sources.

Now here is what science has to say about aspartame:

Detailed scientific and general documentation regarding the toxicity of Nutra Sweet, Equal, diet coke, diet pepsi, and other aspartame containing items. Web page includes real life reports of acute and chronic toxicity due to long-term use as well as FAQs related to the methanol / formaldehyde content of aspartame.

ZERO CALORIE NATION DR STEPHEN & MARC CHANEY

(My notes from this informative CD: Contact us for your own copy!)

Aren’t calorie free foods better for us? Well, yes & unfortunately NO!
Are diet sodas better for us that regular sodas? Neither!
Between 1987 – 2000 Calorie free soda users increased from 70 million to 160 million, overweight population increased from 52% to 66%, obesity increased from 20-32%, obese children from 10% to 17%. We are using diet drinks to wash down fast foods (big Macs & fries) & low nutrient sweets (super sized brownies & Starbucks chocolate chip muffins-large size, of course.) Artificial sweeteners short circuit the body’s ability to judge calories on the basis of sweetness. Yet we still taste the sweetness which causes our insulin levels to increase, which causes hypoglycemia, which increases our hunger. Bottom line, it isn’t working!

Artificial sweeteners:
Pink: Saccharin – Sweet n Low, Increases risk of Bladder Cancer, Used to be banned but lobbyists lifted warning label, based on lobbying, not on science
Blue: Aspartame – NutraSweet of Equal, Can break down into Neurotoxins
Yellow: Sucralose “Polyester sucrose” Splenda – Destroys healthy levels of intestinal bacteria. Increases activity of pumps from blood into intestine. Decreases effectiveness of meds. Metabolizes into toxic carbochlorides, carbon tetrachloride or chloroform. Increases in lung & breast cancer. Stimulates insulin release, which causes hypoglycemia.
Stevia: May damage DNA. Bitter aftertaste, so mixed w other artificial sweeteners.
Polyols: Sorbitol – Diarrhea. Interferes w essential nutrient absorption.
None of the artificial sweeteners are safe for everyone. Are they the best choice? Do we need them?

Choice between:   Sugar free muffin    vs     apple?
high in fat                      low in fat
high in carbs                  low in carbs
high in sodium               low in sodium
low in fiber                    high in fiber
low in nutrients              high in nutrients

Prepackaged foods: Read labels. High in sodium, sugar, incomplete; not going to supply the necessary nutrition. Would you choose those ingredients when you cook?
Prepackaged foods displacing what real foods from your diet?
Labs created foods are cheaper to produce than real foods

Better to watch carbs than calories? (Balance it out)
Fad diets:
low fat       =  high carb
low carb     =  high fat
high protein = high fat
weird diets

After 1-2 years there is no difference in weight.
Initially, low carb, fat high diets higher initial weight loss due to water.
Obesity causes heightened insulin levels, not the other way around (carbs) because tissues become immune to the effects of insulin when we become obese.
Carbs do not cause obesity. Insulin resistance impairs carbohydrate metabolism.
High fat diets lead to heart disease,  diabetes, cancer. Not healthy, not effective for long term weight control.

BMI (Body Mass Index) measure of body fat
                    lowest with high carb diets
highest with low carb, high fat diets
HEI (Healthy Effectiveness Index) measure of diet quality
Highest in high carb diets (fruits & vegetables)
Lowest in those consuming low carb, high fat diets

Fat packs a lot of calories: 9 calories for each gram of fat, 4 calories for each gram of protein/carbs

Choose optimal foods.  Do it right this time!

GOOD FATS: mono unsaturated Olive Oil, & Omega 3 poly unsaturated fats from fish oils
Mediterranean dieters, eating a diet rich in mono & omega rich polyunsaturated fats, have a 25% lower chance of dying of heart disease & cancer. Consumption of 1 gram of EPA (an omega 3 fat) a day is associated with a 45-53% lower risk of dying of heart disease.

OK FATS (Omega 6) Vegetable oils
BAD FATS Saturated & Trans fats

Recommends Mediterranean, American Heart Disease, and DASH Diets, designed to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Diets are not short term, so you can then go back to eating “regular” foods again.

Choose a diet that you can sustain, that becomes a part of your new lifestyle. Long term success requires continuing to follow a healthy diet, regular, adequate exercise, with calories-out exceeding calories-in.

Those on 2001 Weight Control Registry (those who kept weight off 10 yrs or more)
High carb, low fat diet.
Internalized eating patterns.
          Monitored weight on regular basis.
          Ate breakfast.
Lots of exercise.

DO NOT STARVE YOURSELF IN ORDER TO LOSEWEIGHT, NOT NOW, NOT THEN, NOT EVER!
Nothing worse than starving your body of essential carbs, fats, proteins & essential nutrients to lose weight!

Severe caloric restriction can be counter productive. We have a survival mechanism which decreases our metabolic rate when we significantly decrease calories. Dieting burns muscle as well as fat. Exercise increases metabolic rate & muscle mass, which increases metabolic rate and decreases insulin resistance, which is a barrier to being able to eat a healthy diet & still lose weight.

Yo-Yo dieting: Severe calorie restriction decreases metabolic rate, so we have to reduce our caloric intake even further. During famine response we lose weight by burning lean muscle mass, reduces metabolic rate even further, because muscle burns calories more rapidly than fat. So we have lost muscle as well as fat. Then, when we fall off our diet, and go back to our normal eating patterns, eating the way we did before, we are faced with reduced metabolic rate from loss of muscle mass, and the weight they gain is mostly fat. They never regain that muscle, so their metabolic rate remains low. Bottom line: In a typical diet, if you lose 12#, 5# of that came from muscle. If each # burns 50 calories a day, that means you must eat 250 calories less every day just to keep your weight off.  EAT, to keep your metabolism high, & your body healthy!

EXERCISE: Cardio, resistance & weight bearing, functional (several large muscle groups at a time-lunges plyometrics) Find a training partner or coach to keep you accountable.
Under the concept of muscle confusion: Don’t do the same thing over & over. Burnout, your body will stop achieving weight loss.
Corrective & rehabilitation exercises to reduce fatigue & injury during workout sessions: foam rolls, warm up & cool off stretches
Get outdoors stimulate mind in conjunction with exercise, hike, ride bike, rather than continuous tread mill. (Burn out from physical & emotional boredom.)
Set reasonable goals: Immediate, mid term & Loan term goals, & note progress.
Have fun w it; something you want to do.

Portion sizes  getting bigger. 1000-1500 calories per meal! Read menu - ck it out on website (even via cell phone from restaurant, if not on the menu.) Eat slowly, so appetite catches up w the amount of food you have eaten. Make logical choices, skip the sauces, gravies. Doggy bag.
Dessert? Make occasional wise choices (fresh fruit in season) If you can’t imagine doing it as a permanent part of your life, don’t get started on it. Make room in your overall caloric budget.

Snacks? Pick em wisely. Essential if losing weight to keep blood sugar levels on an even keel. Getting too hungry sabotages diets. Fresh, unprocessed foods. Use common sense. Portion size. Move containers of undesirable foods out of sight. Watch fats & salts. (avoid cheese, dips.) Don’t eat from bag in front of TV or when visiting w friends. Portion out your snacks in advance. Balance & moderation the key to success.

ALCOHOL. Am I fine if I stick to Merlot, low calorie beer or Vodka? All alcoholic drinks have calories. Watch mixers. Have you left room in your caloric budget? What nutrient rich foods are you displacing in your diet? Our bodies treat the calories in alcohol just like fat. Alcohol causes hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which makes you hungry. Alcohol impairs judgment, so we are more apt to eat foods that we should not eat.

Take advantage of all the free tools available to you.
12 wk clinical study w Cinch Inch Loss Plan showed an average weight loss of 15.4#; lost an average of 4.1” from waist, 2.6” from hips; most impt muscle mass unchanged; all weight loss came from fat. Ask to see the inch loss stories. This program works! Educate yourself on what you are doing, so you get the most out of it.

Conclusion:
There is no magic formula: calories-in always must be less than calories-out to lose weight.
Fad diets almost never work, long term. If you can’t finish, don’t start. Only start on a diet that you can maintain for a lifetime. Common sense.

How To Vote Toxin Free With Your Shopping Cart

How To Vote Toxin Free With Your Shopping Cart

by David Wallinga, M.D.

Rising prices and food recalls have exposed the myriad challenges facing our global food system. Dr. David Wallinga of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy discusses how to use our food dollars to improve our general nutritional health and forge a sustainable agricultural economy.

Signs of an emerging crisis: melamine in baby formula and candies; a rise in obesity and diet-related diseases; air and water pollution from factory farms; and the record-sized “Dead Zone” in the Gulf of Mexico, caused in large part by natural gas-derived corn fertilizers flowing from the Mississippi. And we are likely heading for more changes because our industrialized food system relies on costly and polluting fossil fuels, used intensively in the form of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers as well as for transporting food around the world.

Public confidence in our food system has also been shaken by the growing awareness that today, most healthy U.S. livestock and poultry receive human antibiotics or heavy metals in their feed. As a result, supermarket meat is often contaminated with bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics or with arsenic residues. Consolidation of food production, processing and distribution in the hands of a few large entities exacerbates a number of food safety risks. And we have experienced a string of recalls due to contamination with melamine, heavy metals like mercury, or disease-causing bacteria like E. coli O157:H7 or Salmonella.

We have surveyed the food landscape and zeroed in on ten steps we can all take to steer our global food system in a more favorable direction.

1. Buy pesticide-free produce.

Produce from conventional, industrialized agriculture systems–where use of synthetic pesticides is routine–tend to have more pesticides compared to produce raised organically or under other, more sustainable systems. Data from the USDA’s Pesticide Data Program (PDP) show 90 percent or more of conventionally produced apples, peaches, pears and strawberries have pesticide residues; 2004 PDP data found at least 4 pesticides in 11 percent of fruits and vegetables tested. Pesticides are designed to be toxic to biological endpoints that are typically shared by humans and pests alike.

There is growing scientific consensus that even very small doses of pesticides can adversely affect people, especially during the vulnerable periods of in utero and early childhood development when organ systems are maturing most quickly, when toxic defenses are least established, and when early programming of risks for chronic disease later in life takes place. Exposure to pesticides is linked to chronic diseases including Parkinson’s Disease, child and adult cancers and neurodevelopmental harm. Dozens of pesticides are known or suspected to disrupt normal hormone function.

At present, government-certified or third-party certified food labels, like certified organic, are the best avenue for avoiding dietary exposure to pesticides. Recent studies suggest switching to an organic diet can eliminate residues of certain pesticides in children’s urine in just a few days. Switching to certified organic produce for the “dirty dozen”—the 12 domestic and imported fruits and vegetables most routinely contaminated–will greatly reduce one’s exposure to the 14 or so different pesticides typically found on conventionally grown produce on a given day, according to analysis by the Environmental Working Group.

2. Be a “locavore.”

Buy locally produced foods, when possible, to support the economic health of your local foodshed, and to help reduce “food miles.” The U.S. food production system accounts for an estimated 17 percent of the nation’s fossil fuel use.16 Truck-shipped produce in Chicago traveled an average of 1500 miles in 1998, according to Iowa State University. Buying local can reduce your carbon “foodprint.” Buying from the farmer (directly, on the internet, or via a Community Supported Agriculture program) allows you to know exactly where your food comes from and how it has been grown. Much non-certified, locally grown produce also uses few or no pesticides.

3. Know where your food comes from.

Our global, consolidated food system can make it hard to know exactly where your food comes from. A single hamburger patty can co-mingle meat from a hundred different head of cattle, from four different countries. Or, looked at from another perspective, a single contaminated carcass shredded for hamburger can pollute eight tons of finished ground beef. Given the huge size of many meat processing plants, a single package of ground beef can contain meat from hundreds of cows. In the Jack in the Box outbreak, investigators found that the ground beef from the most likely supplier contained meat from 443 different cattle that had come from farms and auctions in six states via five slaughterhouses. In July 2008, the USDA finally issued a rule requiring country of origin labeling of some food commodities. Beginning in September 2008 muscle cuts and ground beef (including veal), lamb, chicken, goat, pork; fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables; macadamia nuts; pecans, ginseng, and peanuts will be labeled for their country of origin.

4. Shop for safer, more sustainable fish.

Find fish good for you (high in healthful fats, low in environmental toxins), as well as good for the ocean. Fish are an important source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. But overfishing and unsustainable fish harvesting practices have left many seafood species depleted or on the brink of extinction. Global dispersal of certain toxic pollutants—like PCBs or mercury—that persist in the environment and/or bio-accumulate in the food chain, make some larger, more predatory fish less safe to consume than others. This is especially true for pregnant woman and children. A huge body of research supports the importance of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet, American diets are highly deficient in omega-3 fats. People should neither avoid fish consumption, nor consume fish blindly. The most prudent approach for the health of our environment and the people in it is to eat safer,
less polluted fish species from sustainable fisheries.

5. Eat grass-fed meat and dairy products.

In recent decades, ruminants and other food animals have been moved from outdoors to indoors, and from grass and forage diets to feed composed primarily of grains. There is some evidence that animals fed grain-based diets are themselves less healthy, and produce meat and dairy products lower in omega-3 fatty acids and other beneficial fats. Eating food from grass-fed animals can address some of these concerns. The USDA’s 2007 voluntary standard for meat marketed as grass-fed precludes these animals from getting routine antibiotics. Antibiotics are used to promote growth as well as to compensate for the industrialized conditions that put these animals at greater risk of infection. About half of these feed antibiotics are from medically important classes, including penicillins, tetracyclines and erythromycins. Scientific consensus exists that these unnecessary agriculture antibiotics are helping create an epidemic of hard-to-treat (and sometimes untreatable) multi-drug resistant infections in humans.

6. Avoid chicken raised with arsenic.

Instead of conventional chicken, buy certified organic, which is arsenic-free, or from local producers who can assure arsenic was not used. In addition to routine antibiotics, at least 70 percent of conventionally raised broiler chickens in the U.S. are fed arsenic. The most common additive is roxarsone (3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid). Roxarsone is an “organic” form of arsenic, once thought medically benign. Once ingested by animals, however, roxarsone can degrade into cancer-causing inorganic forms of arsenic (arsenite and arsenate) within the animal’s digestive tract and in animal waste. Roxarsone is FDA-approved for growth promotion, feed efficiency and “improved pigmentation” of meat. Significantly, the 27 countries of the European Union have never approved this practice as safe.

Meat from chickens fed arsenic can carry arsenic residues, only adding to a person’s risk of disease from arsenic exposure elsewhere in one’s diet and environment. The ultimate fate of 75 percent of the arsenic in U.S. poultry feed resides in the 26-55 billion pounds of chicken litter created annually, 90 percent of which is currently applied to fields and cropland as “fertilizer".

7. Buy dairy products from cows not given synthetic growth hormone (rBGH).

The FDA-required package insert for rBGH lists 17 adverse health impacts for cows treated with the hormone, including mastitis. Cattle treated with rBGH get more mastitis, and therefore receive more antibiotics, which contributes to antibiotic resistance. Animal and human health concerns have led most industrialized nations, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the European Union to ban rBGH use in dairy production.

IGF-1 is a growth factor found in both cows and humans. Increased IGF-1 levels in humans are associated with elevated risk for colon, breast, and prostate cancer. It is known that rBGH use raises IGF-1 levels in cows and milk. What remains unclear is whether drinking milk with higher IGF-1 levels will raise IGF-1 levels in humans. Given this uncertainty Health Care Without Harm–a global health coalition of 473 organizations in more than 50 countries–encourages health care providers to recommend non-rBGH dairy products.

8. Avoid plastic bottles and food packaging.

Most soft drinks, juice and water bottles are made of PETE (polyethylene terephthalate ethylene.) While these petroleum derived bottles are recyclable, the vast majority are thrown away. The plastic packaging in some cling wraps and squeeze bottles, cooking oil and peanut butter jars, is made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or #3 plastic. PVC often contains phthalates (pronounced "thAl-ates"), phthalic esters or benzenedicarboxylic acid esters, used primarily as plasticizers to make the PVC product soft and elastic. Since phthalates are not chemically bound to PVC polymer, they readily leach out of PVC products.

Phthalates act as hormone disruptors increasing the risk of reproductive damage and asthma. PVC manufacture and incineration produces dioxins, another hormone disrupting family of chemicals and a human carcinogen. As of 2008, new federal law bans six phthalates from children’s toys, but not from food wraps, lunch boxes, shower curtains, vinyl blinds or other vinyl products.

Concerns about hormone disruption have also been raised for bisphenol A, the chief chemical building block of polycarbonate, some #7 plastics, and epoxy resins. Clear plastic polycarbonate is found in many reusable water and baby bottles; bisphenol A is also found in the plastic liners of cans of tuna fish and infant formula. Bisphenol A is a synthetic estrogen, similar to diethylstilbesterol (DES), and has been found to leach from plastic containers into breast milk and other foods at levels known to cause harm.

9. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet to help prevent cancer and heart disease.

The anti-inflammatory diet has three major components. First aim for a diet rich in antioxidants by consuming 7-9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Second, try to find a better balance between your ingestion of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. The average American probably eats 15 times more omega-6s than omega-3s; a more healthful balance is a ratio of between 2:1 and 4:1. To reach this balance, both boost your omega-3 intake, and shrink your consumption of beef, poultry, and processed foods high in soybean, safflower, corn and other oils rich in omega-6 fatty acids. Third, choose more complex, less processed carbohydrates to avoid spikes in blood sugars which ultimately lead to a pro-inflammatory cascade. These carbs are, for example, whole grain cereal grains and bakery products, rather than those from bleached grains or white flour.

10. Choose your foods wisely to prevent diseases linked to the toxic chemicals prevalent in our industrialized foods and farming systems.

Preferably eat whole, fresh foods. Minimize consumption of processed, refined and most fast food. And avoid partially hydrogenated oils–a source of trans fats–and high fructose corn syrup, both signs of low quality food.

Follow these ten steps and we not only improve our health, we send a strong signal to farmers, grocery stores, and policymakers as to the kinds of food we want to eat—at home, in our schools and in our hospitals. How we spend our food dollars can steer the future direction of our global food system in a healthier, more sustainable direction.

David Wallinga, M.D., is Director of the Food and Health Program at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy.

Which Food Additives Cause Mood and Behavioral Problems in Children

Which Food Additives Cause Mood and Behavioral Problems in Children

by TIM UTTON, Daily Mail, UK

Research has shown that the food additives used in hundreds of children's foods and drinks can cause temper tantrums and disruptive behavior. A Government-funded study confirms what many parents have long suspected about the effect of chemicals put into sweets, biscuits and foods. Colorings in products such as Smarties, Jelly Tots and fizzy drinks could spark behavior changes in up to a quarter of toddlers.

Research into a group of three year-olds found they were more likely to lack concentration, lose their temper, interrupt others and struggle to get to sleep when they drank fruit juice dosed with colorings and preservatives.

Following the study, food watchdog the Food Commission has found that 200 children's foods and drinks contain one or more of the additives called into question by the research.

The Commission is calling for the additives to be removed from the everyday foods and drinks which appeal to children. Even youngsters with no history of hyperactivity can be affected, said the scientists. They concluded that all children could benefit from the removal of specified artificial food colorings from their diet.

The Food Commission claims it is the first time a Government-sponsored scientific study has corroborated the link between food colorings and preservatives and changes in children's mood and behavior.

A group of 227 three-year olds from the Isle of Wight took part in a month long project by the UK Asthma and Allergy Research Center. For two weeks the children drank a daily fruit juice dosed with 20mg of artificial colorings and 45mg of preservative, which are either equal to or below permitted levels. The additives tested were the artificial food colorings Tartrazine E102, Sunset Yellow E110, Carmoisine E122, Ponceau 4R E124, and the preservative Sodium Benzoate E211. All five were given at the same time in a single drink.

For the other two weeks the children drank a fruit juice which was identical in appearance but without the additives. Parents filled in reports assessing their child's behavior on criteria such as interrupting, fiddling with objects, disturbing others, difficulty settling down to sleep, concentration and temper tantrums. The report said the results showed the artificial food colorings and sodium benzoate preservative had 'substantial effects' on behavior.
The scientists concluded that significant changes in children's hyperactive behavior could be produced by removing colorings and additives from their diet. They added: 'The findings suggest that benefit would accrue for all children from such a change - and not just for those already showing hyperactive behavior or who are at risk of allergic reactions.'
The Food Commission wants a ban on the additives and says the colourings tested have been restricted in other countries to protect children.

A spokesman for the Government's Food Standards Agency said the research was not conclusive. Nestlé Rowntree, which makes Smarties, Fruit Pastilles and Jelly Tots, said food additives it used were permitted by European and UK laws and any additives or colours had been tested to the highest standards. GlaxoSmithKline, which produces Ribena, said: 'We certainly wouldn't use any additives unless they were approved as safe.' Burton's Foods, which makes Jammie Dodgers, said its biscuits contained only half the amount of Carmoisine stated in legal guidelines. Cadbury Trebor Bassett, which makes Maynard Wine Gums, said: 'Carmoisine is a permitted colouring which has been used for many years.' Campina UK, which produces Yazoo Milk Drinks, said it used only approved ingredients.

Table compiled by Sue Dengate, author of the bestselling book and film 'Fed Up: Understanding how food affects your child and what you can do about it.'

Our food has changed so drastically in the last few decades it is no wonder that food-related behavior and learning problems in children are increasing. Contrary to what many parents think, additives - more importantly than just sugar - are to blame for behavior problems. Reactions are related to dose, so the more additives children eat, the more likely they are to be affected.

Additives are now used widely in foods such as bread, butter, crackers, yogurt, juice and muesli bars as well as in junk food. Parents who say ‘we eat healthy food’ are generally shocked to find that their children can be consuming 20 additives or more per day.

Irritability, temper outbursts, oppositional defiance, restlessness and difficulty falling asleep are the main behavioral effects of additives. But parents rarely realize that food chemicals can be associated with many other effects including arguing with siblings, making silly noises, speech delay, anxiety, depression or difficulty concentrating. Additive-free children are generally calmer, happier and more cooperative.
Rashes, headaches, bed wetting, stomach aches, sneaky poos, constipation or asthma can also be a problem. Parents of asthmatic children are usually unaware that sulphite preservatives (220-228) in foods such as dried fruits, sausages, cordials and some fruit drinks can irritate airways.

So what can we eat? Read ingredient labels. Choose preservative-free bread. Buy color-free yogurts, ice creams and lollies such as caramels and toffees. Choose plain rather than flavored chips, crackers and noodles. Encourage your children to drink water as their main drink.
